Last Hope began on June 14, 2002 as an ambitious modification for Valve's Half-Life, drawing deep inspiration from the beloved X-COM series. Founded by Salvi (Florida, US), ApOcaLyPSe_1985 (Netherlands), and Psyguy (Montreal), the project aimed to bring the tactical alien defense theme of X-COM into the immersive first-person shooter experience of Half-Life.
The mod featured custom weapons modeled after X-COM's iconic arsenal, unique player and enemy models, detailed maps inspired by X-COM mission environments, and items that captured the essence of the strategic gameplay that made X-COM a legend.
Development was centered around the phpBB 2.0 community forums at lasthopemod.com/dboard/, where 50+ modders from around the world - including the USA, UK, Netherlands, Canada, Hungary, Russia, Australia, Egypt, and beyond - collaborated on mapping, texturing, modelling, and skinning. The forums became a hub for discussion, feedback, and showcasing work-in-progress content.
